jackings and robberies. Paying a bit extra for luxury bus services is often worth the added
comfort and security. Exercise extreme care with your belongings on cheaper buses and
refrain from keeping baggage in overhead luggage racks. It is also recommended to carry
extra food with you on long bus rides in case of a breakdown or road strike.
International
From the Terrapuerto bus terminal, Ormeño ( 42-7788) has two buses a week to Santi-
ago, Chile (US$130, 2½ days), and three a week to Buenos Aires, Argentina (US$190,
three days).
Long-distance
Most bus companies have departures from the terminal terrestre or the smaller Terrapu-
erto bus terminal, both of which are together on Av Andrés Avelino Cáceres, less than
3km south of the city center (take a taxi for S5). Check in advance which terminal your
bus leaves from and keep a close watch on your belongings while you're waiting there.
There's an S1 departure tax from either terminal. Both terminals have shops, restaurants
and left-luggage facilities. The more chaotic terminal terrestre also has a global ATM and
a tourist information office.
Dozens of bus companies have desks in the terminal so shop around. Prices quoted in
the boxed text show a range between super-luxury Cruz del Sur ( 42-7375) and
Ormeño ( 42-3855) with 180-degree reclining 'bed' seats, and no-thrills Flores (
42-9905, 43-2228) which travels to a greater variety of destinations including Mollendo,
Moquegua and Ilo.
