La Nueva Palomino $$
(Leoncio Prado 122; mains S14-29; lunch) Definitely the local favorite, the atmo-
sphere at this picantería is informal and can turn boisterous even during the week when
groups of families and friends file in to eat local specialties and drink copious amounts of
chicha de jora . The restaurant is in the Yanahuara district 2km northwest of the city cen-
ter.

(Portal de Flores 122; cakes S7-9) Five tiny tables but a choice of twice as many giant
cakes teases you into this diminutive cafe on the Plaza de Armas for a post-dinner
sweetener under the colonial arches.

El Charrua $$
( 34-6688; www.elcharrua.com ; Cuesta del Olivo 318; mains S30-50) This new
Argentine-Uruguayan grill with its dark wood, gentlemen's club-style cocktail bar is biv-
ouacked in the Yanahuara quarter just off leafy Plaza Yanahuara. Its terrace enjoys one of
the best views in the city with the symmetrical hump of El Misti, looking like an upturned
Christmas pudding, seemingly close enough to touch. The heavily meat-biased menu is
well complemented by some robust malbec reds. Not surprisingly, it ain't cheap.

El Tio Dario $$
( 27-0473; Callejon de Cabildo 100; mains S22-50) Like fish? Like intimate secret
garden settings? Then, hook up with a taxi (or walk) out to the pleasant Yanahuara district
for the ultimate in ceviches or grilled fish dishes served in a flower-rich garden that
frames superb volcano views. It's a two-minute walk from the Yanahuara mirador.

(Ugarte 208; dishes S7-12; 11am-10pm Mon-Fri, 5-11pm Sat) With just four tables
and the common garden spud as its star ingredient, Hatunpa probably doesn't sound prom-
ising, but it has a fervent and fast-growing following. The trick? Potatoes originate in Peru
and the arequipeños know how to embellish them with imaginative sauces and toppings.
Even better, they're cheap (and filling) too.
