RELIGIOUS
Semana Santa
(Holy Week) Arequipeños claim that their Semana Santa celebrations leading up to Easter
are similar to the very solemn and traditional Spanish observances from Seville. Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday processions are particularly colorful and some-
times end with the burning of an effigy of Judas.
Fiesta de la Virgen de Chapi
Arequipa also fills up for this festival, celebrated on May 1 in the Yanahuara district.
RELIGIOUS
August 15
The founding day of the city is celebrated with parades, dancing, beauty pageants, climb-
ing competitions on El Misti and other energetic events over the course of several days.
The fireworks show in the Plaza de Armas on the evening of August 14 is definitely worth
catching.
CULTURAL
Sleeping
Central Arequipa is peppered with hotels of all shapes, sizes and prices. Due to the nature
of the architecture in this Unesco World Heritage zone, many of them inhabit attractive,
thick-walled sillar buildings. Cable TV and free wi-fi are pretty much a given in all but
the bottom-rung places. Breakfast is also usually included though it is little more than
bread, jam and coffee in the cheaper joints. Prices listed are for high season (June to
August), but fluctuate greatly even during these months.

( 22-8991; www.casonasolar.com ; Consuelo 116; r from S104; ) You can live like
a colonial caballero (gentleman) in this 'secret garden' of gorgeousness situated - rather
incredibly given its tranquility - only three blocks from the main square. Grand 18th-cen-
tury rooms are crafted from huge sillar stones and some come with mezzanine bedrooms.
The service (same-day laundry, bus reservations, free airline check-in) is equally dazzling.
Then there's the price. Best bargain in the city - maybe even Peru.
