(Plazuela San Francisco 407; admission S5; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, 9am-1pm Sun) Are-
quipa's and, by definition Peru's, historical trajectory is showcased in this educational, if
unexciting museum that is split into different rooms dedicated to different epochs. There's
pre-Hispanic, the independence era, the republic era and the War of the Pacific. Once
you're done counting the dead heroes (and there are many), pop into the adjacent Museo
Arqueológico Chiribaya Offline map Google map (included in entry fee) which houses an
impressive collection of artifacts from the pre-Incan Chiribaya civilization, including
well-preserved textiles and the only pre-Inca gold collection in southern Peru.

(Álvarez Thomas 200; admission S5; 9am-4pm Mon-Fri) Another small university-run
museum, this one's a little more esoteric with themes jumping between archaeological re-
mains, baroque furniture and colonial art from the Peruvian Cuzco School.

(Consuelo 202; 9am-noon) In another of those gorgeous colonial houses lies this
homage to the newspaper El Peruano, founded in 1825 by legendary politician and South
American liberator Simón Bolívar (it's the oldest surviving newspaper in Latin America).
The small museum includes old printing presses, and some yellowed front pages. A separ-
ate room showcases temporary art expositions.
