Sights & Activities
When temperatures are searing from January through to at least March, the beachside
aquatic park
(adult/child S4/2)
opens alongside the sea, and beachfront discos stay
thumping until the small hours of the morning. But Mollendo can be like a ghost town
throughout the rest of the year.
El Castillo de Forga
was built in 1908 on a crag between beach numbers two and three
by a rich
arequipeño
in love with European architecture. Once an eye-catching stately
home, it is currently unoccupied. There have been proposals to turn it into a casino.
Sleeping & Eating
Mollendo has a clutch of nothing-to-write-home-about hotels, none of which appear to of-
fer breakfast. Reservations are a must during the high season, January to April.
Hotel Bahia del Puerto $$
( 53-2990; Ugarte 301; s/d incl breakfast S50/90; )
Mollendo's cleanest
bargain has some rooms with peek-a-boo ocean views and has benefited from recent
renovations. There's an unattached
chifa
(Chinese restaurant) below.
HOTEL
Hostal La Casona $
( 53-3160; Arequipa 188-192; s/d S30/40; )
The handiest town center option, La
Casona has high-ceilinged, bright rooms with cable TV and hot water. The staff can be
stiff necked, but the atmosphere is casual.
HOTEL
Marco Antonio $$
( 53-4258; Comercio 258; mains S15-24; 8am-8pm Mon-Sat, 8am-7pm Sun; )
A good no-thrills Peruvian cafe that gets the basics right; bank on a well-presented
lomo
saltado
.
