knowledgeable and can help arrange tours, though is sometimes preoccupied with looking
after the restaurant next door.

70/100, dm/s/d/tr without bathroom S17/35/40/55; ) A very friendly, eager-to-please
hombre called Alberto presides over this simple but adequate hostel which offers plenty of
privacy in a variety of double, triple or quadruple rooms, plus one dorm. Water is hot, wi-

HOSTEL
Hostal Refugio del Pirata $$
( 54-5054; www.refugiodelpirata.com ; Av Paracas 6; s/d/tr incl breakfast S60/70/90;
) Rooms are bland here but get the job done, and some have ocean views. The upstairs
terrace provides a pleasant setting to sip a pisco sour while watching the sunset. Ask to
borrow kitchen facilities.

Eating & Drinking
On the waterfront there are loads of lookalike beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood
throughout the day.
El Chorito $$
(Paracas; mains S20-30; noon-9pm) The Italians come to the rescue in the
clean, polished Chorito - part of the Hostal Santa Maria - where a welcome supply of Illy
coffee saves you from the otherwise ubiquitous powdered Nescafé. The cooked-to-order
fish dishes aren't bad either - all locally caught, of course.
SEAFOOD, PERUVIAN
Juan Pablo $$
(Blvd TurĂstico; mains S15-40; 7am-9pm) Probably the best of the restaurants with a
waterfront view, Juan Pablo is a winner for fresh seafood and offers breakfast for those
departing early to the Islas Ballestas.
