Call it a cultural experience. This barely converted auto repair
shop long ago transformed into a bastion of traditional cooking, with long wooden tables
and an open kitchen surrounded by scarred iron pots and drying noodles. Daily specials
rotate but the sought-after signature dish is rabbi - which feeds up to three people for S45.
Award-winning Tunki coffee is served with
chicharrónes
on Sunday for a typical Peruvi-
an breakfast.
Canta Ranita $
(Unión s/n; mains S16-20; 12:30-4pm Wed-Mon)
Just getting here is a treasure hunt -
look for Mercado Capullo in front of the Chung Yion and follow the stalls of trinkets and
soccer shirts to the rear. This open-air grill is no-fuss wonderment, with locals drinking
jars of
chicha
(corn beer) and drinking cold artisan beer biding the time until the
ceviche
apaltado
(with avocado), chicken or blackened octopus doused with olive oil appears. It's
run by the son of the formal restaurant of the same name.
CEVICHE
Las Mesitas $
( 477-4199; Av Grau 341; menús S10; noon-2am)
A vintage spot with terra-cotta
tile floors that serves cheap Peruvian classics and an array of recommended desserts. If
you've been thinking about dipping into
suspiro limeño
(a caramel-meringue sweet), this
would be the place to do it.
PERUVIAN

( 247-7274; Psje Génova 101; mains S25-38; 8am-11pm Tue-Sat)
Around for dec-
ades, this unpretentious spot draped in flags and plastered in photos packs in the locals
with its offering of more than 17 different types of ceviche.

Young Londoner Stew is an unlikely purveyor of Mexican fast food, but it works like a
smash. Try the Baja-style fish tacos served with fresh salsa in homemade flour tortillas.
