Appear in the dream of an empress! Built at the whim of Empress
Taitu in 1907, this is the oldest hotel in Addis, and the main building, which has recently
been tastefully renovated, is virtually a museum piece full of beautiful old furniture and
high ceilings. The newer block contains a wide range of rooms, including some very jolly
doubles. There are plenty of facilities, a lovely garden in which breakfast is served and
lots of other travellers to hang out with. All up it offers a cash-strapped overlander a
classy experience for very little coin.

Friendly, immaculately well-kept, supremely comfortable
with beds that seem custom designed to give sweet dreams, endless piping-hot water and a
quiet side-street location make this place a cut above the competition. The only drawback
is that it's quite far from all the more interesting dining and nightlife options, so it's a
good job they have a reasonable in-house restaurant.

The most salubrious of the cheap
Piazza-area hotels, this place has smart, spacious rooms with polished wood floors and
good showers. On the flip side, the echoey corridor means sound travels and the wi-fi nev-
er seems to work.

One of the great backpacker hangouts of Ethiopia; the cheaper rooms at the Baro are
decidedly skanky, but opt for one of the more expensive options and you'll be the proud
resident of a large and fairly well-maintained room (some with a bath tub). The garden is
a fantastic place to meet other travellers.
