One of Africa's most elite hotels, the Sheraton is astounding
and, in a country like Ethiopia, almost obscene. Actually just about anywhere spending
well over US$7000 a night on a room (which is what the best ones start at) would still be
considered obscene! Needless to say, it's an absolute treat to stay here.

Set squarely in the town centre, this government-run hotel might be fading a
little and feel a bit like a sanatorium, but it's a real institution and has a constant buzz of
people coming and going. The large rooms are a fair deal though some have views over
the slums. Aside from the location, the best assets are the numerous facilities, including a
decent bar and restaurant, internet cafe and travel agent.

Once upon a time the chuff-chuffing of passing steam trains would have
soothed you to sleep here. With the trains no longer functioning, peace and quiet prevails.
Even today the atmosphere harks back to the age of rail travel - the attached bar looks like
a train carriage. The handful of rooms, set around a garden, are old but clean and come
with some character, but noise from said bar can be a problem.

Hidden in the maze of lanes to the east of the train station (look for
the big yellow Shell signs), this campsite, the sole overlanders' party in the city, is a
CAMPSITE
