In-Depth Information
drawcard is the quiet garden, where you can enjoy a cup Somali tea or a meal - the on-site
restaurant (mains US$2-5; breakfast, lunch & dinner) serves up local specialities,
burgers and salads. It's on the northern outskirts of town.
Gallad Hotel $
( 617480, 4405290; r US$10) Don't be fooled by the drab exterior of this multistorey
building. Inside it's much more appealing, with 18 well-scrubbed rooms (with or without
bathrooms), hot showers and an inviting rooftop TV room that proffers unabashed views
of the town. Location is ace - it's smack dab in the centre. One negative: a thigh-burning
number of stairs.
HOTEL
Borama Hotel $
( 4457608; s/d without bathroom US$3/4) Rooms here are utterly simple (a bed and a
mosquito net) and cleanliness is only just OK in the bathrooms - wear flip-flops to shower
- but it's a worthwhile backup if you're seriously strapped for cash. Its best asset is the
quiet location, a little way from the action.
HOTEL
Awdal $$
(mains US$2-4; lunch & dinner) The restaurant of choice for locals. Simple Somali
standards, including camel meat.
SOMALI
Goljano Cafeteria $
(mains US$1-3; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Grab a burger and get filled for minimal
coinage at this undeniable favourite. Superb fruit juices, too.

ROCK ART SITES BETWEEN HARGEISA &
BORAMA
There are two ancient rock art sites off the main road between Hargeisa and Borama. Though playing second fiddle
to Las Geel, they're worth stopping at on the way to Borama if you have your own vehicle with driver - a 4WD is
recommended. It's also advisable to hire a guide who knows the exact location of the sites, as there are no signs.
