your step with a glass of mango or orange juice at this unpretentious supermarket-cum-
cafeteria. Cakes, samosas and sandwiches are available.
Al Baraka $
(off Independence Rd; cakes US$1; 8am-8pm) This is the closest thing Hargeisa has to
a Western cafeteria. It's popular with 20-somethings here to enjoy the atmosphere, chat
over a cappuccino and nosh on calorie-busting cakes.

Dangers & Annoyances
Hargeisa is a safe city, but the usual precautions apply. Avoid walking alone at night, don't
be ostentatious with valuables, and beware of pickpockets in crowded areas.
Internet Access
There's a profusion of internet cafes in the centre, most of them tucked away in anonym-
ous buildings. Connection speed is decent assuming you're not streaming YouTube,
though machine quality varies wildly. Rates range from US$0.50 to US$1 per hour.
Medical Services
There are lots of well-stocked pharmacies around town. For medical treatment, Edna
Adan Hospital ( 4426922; www.ednahospital.org ) offers excellent facilities. It's
staffed by qualified, English-speaking doctors (mostly volunteers).
Money
Most transactions can be conducted using US dollars, but if you want to change money,
head to one of the Dahabshiil ( www.dahabshiil.com ; Independence Rd; 7am-noon &
1-5.30pm Sat-Thu) branches. You'll also find plenty of foreign exchange stalls near the
central market; you can't miss them - they're piled high with blocks of notes held togeth-
