Tadjoura
POP 25,000
Nestled in the shadow of the green Goda Mountains with the bright blue sea lapping at its
doorstep, Tadjoura is a picturesque little place. With its palm trees, whitewashed houses
and numerous mosques, it has an Arabian feel to it. There's little to do here besides stroll
around and soak up the atmosphere, but it's a great place to spend a few hours.
If you're after sustainably produced local handicrafts, the women-run Association des
Femmes de Tadjoura (Tadjoura;
7.30am-12.30pm & 4-6pm Sat-Thu) sells colourful
Afar basketware.

( 27424091, 27424153; http://hotel-restaurant-le-golfe-djibouti-tadjourah.e-
monsite.com ; bungalows with breakfast DFr10,000; ) Under French-Ethiopian man-
agement, this low-key but well-kept resort, popular with French soldiers and their famil-
ies, is situated in a relaxing waterfront setting, about 1.5km from the town centre. The 11
units are not fancy but are functional, and there's a good on-site restaurant (mains
DFr1400-2500; breakfast, lunch & dinner) with a terrace facing the sea. The menu
concentrates on simply prepared seafood served in generous portions. There's no beach to
speak of but the owners can organise transfers to Plage des Sables Blancs (DFr6000 for
four people).

Le Corto Maltese $$
( 77859574, 27510300; r with breakfast DFr12,000; ) A modernish and reasonably
priced choice, Le Corto Maltese is right on the seashore, about 1.5km west of the town
centre. The adjoining 18 rooms are well organised, with good bedding and large bath-
rooms. The rooftop terrace is a plus, and we hear good things about the on-site restaurant
(mains DFr1200-3300; breakfast, lunch & dinner daily) . No beach, but transfers to
Plage des Sables Blancs can easily be arranged. The owner has plans to build overwater
bungalows.
