In-Depth Information
the chimneys, the boiling, sulphurous-smelling springs and the flamingos. Some of the chimneys can be climbed, if
you fancy it. There's a great view of the lake and surrounding plain from La Grande Cheminée (The Big Chimney),
but you should take care, as the shifting shale can make it a bit treacherous underfoot. Don't forget sunscreen and
lots of water.

Campement Touristique d'Asboley $
( 77822291, 21357244; houmed_asboley@hotmail.fr; huts/bungalows with full board
DFr8000/10,000) This campement touristique (traditional huts with shared showers and
toilets) is set in the most surreal landscape you've ever imagined. It lies on a plateau that
proffers stupendous views of the big chimneys - whatever the time of the day, you're
guaranteed to be hypnotised by the scenery. It comprises traditional Afar huts and three
simple bungalows made of cement (true, they don't really blend in such a grandiose envir-
onment). Prices include a guided walk to the chimneys.

Goda Mountains
Northwest of the Gulf of Tadjoura, the Goda Mountains rise to a height of 1750m and are
a spectacular natural oddity. This area shelters one of the rare speckles of green on Dji-
bouti's parched map, like a giant oasis - a real relief after the scorched desert landscapes.
A few Afar villages are scattered around and merit at least a couple of days of your time
to soak up their charm. It won't be long before you're smitten by the region's mellow
tranquillity and laid-back lifestyle.
For outdoorsy types, this area offers ample hiking opportunities.
