If you've got time to kill, explore the large market where most things, except for the
fresh food, are smuggled in from Somaliland. The livestock market ( 8am-2pm Sat-
Thu) , about 3km south of the bus station, is also big. Go early if you want to see camels
since they tend to sell out fast.

ent to Selam bus. Simple, clean rooms at a good price.

Hamba Hotel $
( 0257-754678; d/tw without bathroom Birr184/ 276, d/tw Birr253/368; ) The best
in town, and thus often full of UN and NGO workers, the rooms are big and clean and all
come with satellite TV and hot-water showers. The en-suite rooms also have a minifridge.
There's a water tank and generator as defence against Jijiga's frequent utility outages. It's
on the Harar side of town.

Getting There & Away
Air
Ethiopian Airlines ( 0257-752030) flies daily to Addis Ababa (US$66, two hours) via
Dire Dawa (US$33, 25 minutes). The airport is 14km out of town, Birr150 in a bajaj .
Bus
The bus station is about 3km east of town. Minibuses and a few buses leave frequently
throughout the day for Harar (Birr40, 1½ hours) and Togo-Wuchale (Wajaale on the
Somaliland side; Birr30, one hour), on the Somaliland border. See Click here f or details of

There's one regular bus to Addis Ababa (Birr200, 15 hours) at around 2pm. More com-
fortable Selam (Birr320) buses to Addis depart 5am daily from their office located in the
town centre.
