Two other camping options are located near Filweha Hot Springs and on Fantale's
crater rim.
LODGE
Awash Falls Lodge $$$
( 0221-191182; www.awashfallslodge.com ; camping own/hired tent US$12/20, s/tw in-
cl breakfast US$70/100, d US$80-100; ) This attractive place right above the falls has
comfortable traditional-style tukuls and a restaurant with great views. There's 24-hour
power, but not all the tukuls had hot water when we visited. The food (Birr57 to Birr120)
is good, though very pricey, and there's even a small selection of South African and
Ethiopian wines. The owner is serious about conservation, and guides lead a variety of
wildlife and village walks (including camel trekking), and cultural shows can be arranged
at the lodge. There are low-season discounts.
Genet Hotel $$
( 0222-240040; Awash; d in old bldg Birr120, d/tw with fan 345/402, with air-con Bir-
r402/465; ) A solid though overpriced (discounts seem to be easy to come by) tower
on the park end of Awash town near the bus station. Rooms in the new building have
satellite TV, though make sure the air-con works before you pay. The older, cheaper
rooms are quite scruffy. There's a decent restaurant (mains Birr35 to Birr92) here.
HOTEL
Buffet d'Aouache $
( 0222-240008; Awash; r without bathroom Birr71, d Birr150-172; ) Originally
built by the French to service the Djibouti railway and now run by a Greek family, there's
no more atmospheric place around. If all you require is a clean bed, mosquito net and a
cold shower you'll like this potted-plant-filled place. The common facilities are very clean
and there are two rooms with their own bathrooms, though they lack fans. Rooms back
across the railway tracks in a newer building feature fans and plumper beds but less atmo-
sphere. If you have lots of spare time, decent meals (Birr22 to Birr65) can be had.
HOTEL
Hiwot Hotel $
( 0222-260015; Metahara; d without bathroom Birr70, d Birr100-150; ) If you do
stay in Metahara, the Hiwot is the best of a sorry bunch. Rooms in the main building have
a fan and all have very necessary mosquito nets. It's on the west side of town.
