Ethiopia is a huge place, and you're likely to spend a considerable portion of your stay travelling. Here are some
tips to maximise comfort and safety:
» Internal flights can be huge time savers. The national carrier has an extensive do-
mestic route service and a solid safety record. It's cheaper to book your flight once in
Ethiopia.
» If travelling by bus, opt for the newer companies, which offer better service and
more comfortable buses.
» Though expensive, it's not a bad idea to hire a 4WD with a driver, especially for
southern and western Ethiopia. Having your own car allows you to stop wherever
you want and saves time. The driver can also act as a guide-cum-interpreter. Note
also that some national parks can only be entered with a 4WD. Shop around and hire
through a reputable agency.
