In-Depth Information
Sherif Guest House $
(d without bathroom KSh300) Sitting above the bank, this place has vaguely clean rooms,
though the communal toilet is memorable for all the wrong reasons.
HOTEL
Prison Canteen $
(mains Ksh150-200) It says a lot about the quality of life up here when the best place to
eat, drink and party is inside the town jail. It provides a great atmosphere and an excellent
nyama choma (barbecued meat). Open for lunch and dinner.
KENYAN
Information
The border is open from 6am to 6pm daily. Three-month Kenyan tourist visas are avail-
able at the border for most Western nationalities for US$50. You cannot get an Ethiopian
visa at the border.
There are banks on both sides of the border, but the only ATM is at the Commercial
Bank in Kenya. If you need to change between shillings and birr, ask at your hotel.
Getting There & Away
A bus leaves Ethiopian Moyale for Addis Ababa (Birr250) each morning around 5am.
The two-day journey is broken with a night's sleep at Awasa. Many minibuses go to Yabe-
lo (Birr65, four hours).
For those heading south into Kenya, get ready for some teeth-rattling rides: Click here
for details.
For those driving, petrol is cheaper and more reliable on the Ethiopian side.
