Guides, Horses & Handlers
Located in a gated compound on the west side of town but hoping to relocate, the Dodola-
Adama Tour Guide Association ( 0226-660700; www.baletrek.com ;
8.30am-12.30pm & 1.30-5.30pm) organises horses (per day Birr50), horse handlers (one
per two horses, per day Birr50) and mandatory guides (per day Birr187). Visitors must
also pay Birr40 entry.
Treks
Treks typically start from Dodola and follow a dirt road to the tented camp at Changiti
(2850m, 11km, 2½ hours), but if you start by 9am you can ride straight to the first lodge,
Wahoro (18km, five to six hours), either following the thick, fairytale forest along the
Tikiku Lensho River or taking a higher route with good views. From here you work your
way eastward to the lodge Angafu (3460m, 10km, three to four hours); typically it's a
short trip, but there's the option to trek (sans horse) the long way via the Wagabeta Ridge,
which has much wildlife including Ethiopian wolves. The ridge could also be visited the
next day before the easy ride to Adele (3300m, 5km, 1½ to two hours). Then it's a long,
lovely ride to Mololicho (3080m, 18km, five to six hours) and finally the last lodge at
Duro (3350m, 20km, six to seven hours), which most agree has the best vistas. From here
it's a 20km (five- to six-hour) descent to the town of Adaba , 22km east of Dodola.
