In-Depth Information
the oldest written documents about Aksum were discovered here. A full-day Tullu Gudo
trip (Birr1500) provides enough additional time to climb up to the ruins of the original
monastery. A small community-run restaurant on Tulu Gudo serves fresh tilapia.
You can also hire guides at the Visitor Information Centre for birdwatching or cultural
tours.
Sleeping & Eating
Camping is permitted on Ziway's islands and there's talk of a lodge opening on Tullu
Gudo.

( 0464-412077; d Birr110-220; ) Behind the OiLibya station, Bekele Mola's aged
but clean rooms surround a courtyard that's full to the brim with birds. The 'new' rooms
are really quite good. Only some of the old rooms have hot water.

Ziway Tourist Hotel $
( 0464-413993; d without bathroom Birr90, d Birr150-400; ) It can't beat its rival,
Bekele Mola, in the lodging department since it charges more and delivers less, but it's an
acceptable back-up if needed. However, it has become the lunch stop of choice (mains
Birr20 to Birr100) for those on their way to, or back from, the south.

Information
Ziway town hugs the Addis-Shashemene Rd. There's an internet cafe (Birr15 per hour)
just north of Bekele Mola Hotel and another just north of the telecommunications office.
There's also a Dashen Bank with an ATM near the latter.
