Sodo
The hillside capital of Wolaita Zone, Sodo is as forgettable as Hosaina, but it's a better
overnight stop. If you're not in a rush, visit Sodo Museum (admission Birr50;
8.30am-12.30pm & 1.30-5pm Mon-Fri) . It has various objects on display in the big round
hall - the metal and brick exterior covers a traditional-style king's palace - including 2m-
long musical horns, elephant-skin shields and a typical family's home. It's just past the
southern roundabout on the new road. Someone from the Tourism Bureau (the building by
the painted trees) will open the door, turn on the lights and spray air freshener for you.
Newish and overpriced, Fanta Vision Hotel ( 0465-514747; s/tw from Birr250/350;
) is the best of a very uninspiring selection of hotels, though new places are sup-
posedly on the way. It's on the new road, north of the traffic circle. With few exceptions,
the lunch stop of choice for tours passing through is Day Star Restaurant (mains Bir-
r23-92) , 3km south of the hilltop on the Arba Minch road.
The Dashen Bank on the Arba Minch road has an ATM. There are frequent buses to
Arba Minch (Birr49, 3½ hours) and Awasa (Birr46, 2½ hours), plus two morning depar-
tures to Addis Ababa (Birr115, six or seven hours). See Click here f or travel details to
Jimma.
South of Sodo
Eighteen kilometres out of Sodo is the large Thursday cattle market ( 10am-6pm) in
little Humbo . Continuing on, you can see Lake Abaya ( Click here ) in the distance as the
road drops slowly into the Rift Valley. Thirty-eight kilometres out of Sodo you'll cross a
bridge and see a tall two-tiered waterfall on your right, unless it's the dry season, when it
disappears. From there, the road runs between the lake and the forest-clad Guge Moun-
tains all the way to Arba Minch ( Click here ) , tossing out some stunning scenery in the
early stages. About 10km before Arba Minch is the turn-off for Dorze ( Click here ) .
