Sleeping & Eating
Rooms can be in short supply, so it's best to call ahead.
Tossa Pension $
( 0331-119225; d without bathroom Birr50, d/tw Birr149/172; ) Not only the best
rooms in Dessie, but with satellite TV and good mattresses, it's also the best value. Even
the common facilities are very clean. It's on the far north end of town, a longish walk
from any restaurants.
PENSION
Qualiber Hotel $
( 0331-111548; d/tw Birr230/276; ) Exceptionally clean and well cared for, Qu-
aliber defies the norm for older hotels. We can't quite call it cosy, but this whitewashed
spot on a quiet secondary street above the city centre does have character.
HOTEL
Kokeb Pension $
( 0331-116366; r without bathroom Birr40) A simple setup around a tiled courtyard
with clean, newly painted rooms, it's leagues better than most hotels in its class across
Ethiopia, as long as you don't mind squat toilets. It's in a yellow building with a faded
sign about 200m north of the bus station.
PENSION
Ayetegeb Café $
(mains Birr18-70) Formal in an Ethiopian kind of way, this hard-to-miss place on the
main drag in the heart of town has a large crowd-pleasing menu of European and national
dishes plus offers half-pizza for solo travellers. There's a bakery in front.
EUROPEAN, ETHIOPIAN
Information
There are many internet cafes (Birr21 per hour), pharmacies, banks and small supermar-
kets along the main drag. The Dashen Bank in the unmissable Hajji Mohammed Yassin
tower at the southern roundabout has an ATM.
