WOLDIA TO ADDIS ABABA
It's possible to finish the home-stretch of the Historical Circuit in one long day, but most
people prefer two, overnighting in Dessie or Kombolcha.
Woldia
POP 50,400 / ELEV 2112M
Woldia used to be a necessary overnight stop for public-transit travellers to Lalibela. Better
roads and more frequent departures mean most people now arrive early enough to catch a
connection that same day, but an unlucky few still get stuck here. For a transit town, it has
a surprisingly pitiful selection of hotels and water shortages are common. There are many
internet cafes and the Dashen Bank in the old town above the bus station promises an ATM
soon.

HOTEL
Lal Hotel $
( 0333-310367, www.lalhotelsandtours.com ; s Birr267, d & tw Birr356-445; ) This
is the best available hotel. Turn into the entrance and it looks inviting, but enter and you'll
find deferred maintenance and a lack of hot water in many of the rooms. Neither acceptable
at these prices. The restaurant, however, has Woldia's broadest menu (Birr40 to Birr110)
and best food, including a decent pizza.
Yordanos Hotel $
( 0333-311357; d without bathroom Birr50, d & tw Birr70-120; ) A scruffy place, it
has satellite TV in the rooms and offers a fair price, and the lines of vines over the court-
yard are a nice touch.
