edge of the ridge for 360-degree views. And while it would be expected to jack up the
faranji
prices, it doesn't. The only improvement would be a bigger menu, but what it
does, it does well. Stop by at 11am to see the

Mountain View Hotel $$
(mains Birr85-109; )
As much as we love Ben Abeba, when it comes down
to the food itself, Mountain View isn't just tops in Lalibela, it's one of the best restaurants
in Ethiopia. The diverse menu offers some Indian- and Jamaican-inspired dishes.

Unique Restaurant $
(mains Birr35-58)
This understated but cosy little restaurant ('bad house, good food' is
what charming owner Sisco tells people who hesitate outside her door) serves the usual
mix of national and
faranji
dishes (the fasting pizza is unexpectedly good). It receives reg-
ular positive reviews from happy punters and stays open until 10pm; later than most Lali-
bela restaurants.

Zewditu Bar & Restaurant $
(mains Birr27-60)
The partners behind this restaurant used to work in other restaurants
before striking out on their own. Both the pastas and the
tibs
are delicious and the cute tra-
ditional dining room is very inviting.

Seven Olives Hotel $$
(mains Birr32-121)
This old-timer features half-decent
faranji
fare, but most people come
because the leafy, bird-filled terrace makes it the most pleasant spot in the town centre;
and this is why they can get away with prices like Birr32 for a juice.

John Café $
(mains Birr20-35)
A great little local breakfast spot in the town centre.
