whitewashed rooms with a touch of local art to brighten them up. The service is pleasant
and the garden courtyard a quiet spot to relax.

( 0333-360023; alparahotel@yahoo.com; old block d/tw US$10/15, new block d/tw
US$25/35; ) Alef's pleasant new rooms are bright, tiled and clean with bathtubs and
views. The older rooms, though dark and uninspiring, are still decent value. The restaurant
makes a good choice for this part of town.

Mountain View Hotel $$$

100; ) Built by two former tour guides who received a miraculous business loan
from a generous tourist, this comfortable hotel has an enviable perch with great views and
a lovely stone-and-glass design. Rooms, all with balconies, are rather ordinary, but offer
nothing to complain about.

Lalibela Hudad $$$
( 9110-29052; www.lalibelahudad.com ; campsites incl breakfast US$35; s/d/tr without
bathroom incl breakfast US$62/76/86; Sep-mid-Jul; ) This peaceful new (and still
developing) eco-lodge in the hills above Lalibela (two hours by foot: many people use
mules) has stone-and-thatch tukuls , incredible views and resident gelada monkeys. Des-
pite the high price, the tukuls are very simple (shared drop toilets) though hot showers and
decent food (lunch and dinner cost Birr100) are available. Of course there's good walking
in the area: the summit of Abuna Yosef is about four hours away.
HOTEL
Selam Guest House $
Offline map Google map
( 0333-600374; d/tw Birr150/200) This very friendly four-room guesthouse has been
around awhile, but the on-site owner makes sure it still has that new out-of-the-wrapper
look. The rooms are plain and simple, but the calm friendly vibe makes the price fair for
Lalibela.
