In-Depth Information
Gheralta Local Guide Association ( 0914-616851; 1-3 people per day Birr250, 4-6
people Birr350) are mandatory for Abuna Yemata Guh and Maryam Korkor (where going
alone is potentially dangerous; see The Trouble with Tigray, Click here ) , but they can be
hired for other places too. Their office is at the main junction in Megab. You can also hire
'scouts' to carry bags and chase away children.
If you're really keen, search for Ivy Pearce, David R Buxton or Ruth Plant's research
on Tigray before leaving home.
Getting There & Around
Quite good gravel roads now connect the villages with the trailheads to most churches, but
a few are down bad roads that require a 4WD. These can be hired in Aksum, Mekele and
Gheralta Lodge ( Click here ) . Contract minibuses are available in Hawzien, Wukro and
Abi Adi.
If you're patient, exploration by public transport is possible. There are many minibuses
from Adigrat (Birr22, 1½ hours) to Wukro and also from Mekele to Wukro (Birr15, one
hour) and Hawzien (Birr33, 2½ hours) via Freweyni. Further public transport information
is given in the coverage of each clusters and some of the individual churches. There's al-
ways much more traffic on market days.
There are also organised treks in the region; see Trekking Tigray, Click here .
