(admission Birr50) Built into a small outcrop rather than a big hill, this church feels like a
tomb and may have been one before being converted. The 19th-century 'new' church
alongside it is partially cut from the rock and topped by plastered stone construction,
which is easily distinguished because it's painted white. It's along the road on the eastern
edge of the village of Dugem.

Rectangular in shape, with six massive freestanding pillars, this large and impressive
14th-century church (AKA Debre Tsion) is known for its diverse architectural features, in-
cluding decorated cupolas, bas-reliefs and carved crosses on the walls and ceiling. It also
has beautiful, though faded and damaged, 16th-century murals and an unusual, large 15th-
century ceremonial fan. It sits like a fortress on a hill about 500m south of Dugem and can
be accessed either from this village or the same parking area as Yohannes Maequdi; either
way, it's a steep one-hour walk up the back of the mountain.

High atop the mountain and not visible from the ground below, this rectangular chapel has
six freestanding pillars that support a ceiling carved with geometrical designs. While it's
best known for well-preserved murals, it's less striking overall than Abuna Abraham and
most visitors remember the intense atmosphere rather than the architecture. It's accessed
from the village of Matari (park by the school) and is around a one-hour walk via a steep
footpath.
