Getting There & Away
Ethiopian Airlines ( 0347-752300) flies twice daily to Addis Ababa (US$80, one to
three hours), sometimes direct and sometimes via Lalibela (US$46, 45 minutes) and Gon-
der (US$45, 40 minutes).
For buses to Gonder and Debark (for the Simien Mountains), go to Shire (Birr23, 1½
hours) first. There's only one bus (6am) and few minibuses to Adigrat (Birr44, 3½ hours),
but services are more frequent from Adwa (Birr12, 30 minutes). There are two morning
buses to Mekele (Birr82, seven hours, 6am), which can drop you in Wukro (Birr65, six
hours).
Aksum's travel agencies ( Click here ) and numerous freelance agents rent vehicles (in-
cluding driver and guide) for trips to Yeha, Debre Damo and the rock churches of Tigray.
Birr1300 (excluding fuel) is a fair price for minibus trips of more than one day, but it may
require lengthy negotiations.
Getting Around
A taxi to/from the airport, 5.5km from town, costs Birr40 'shared'. Almost all the popular
hotels have vans waiting to meet incoming flights, though you may want to call just to be
sure yours will be there.
Contract bajaj charge foreigners Birr15 to Birr20 from the Africa Hotel area to the
Northern Stelae Field. A shared bajaj is Birr1.5 to cross town.
Bicycles (Birr10 per hour) can be hired just south of the piazza.
Adwa

Like Aksum, unassuming, urban Adwa belies its status. For Ethiopians, the town holds
huge significance. It was in the dramatic mountains surrounding Adwa that the Emperor
Menelik II inflicted the biggest defeat ever on a colonial army in Africa, thus saving
