In-Depth Information
( 0581-122898; d without bathroom Birr120, d/tw Birr200/300) This popular back-
packer spot has the same broken doors and toilet seats you expect at cheaper places. It's
worth considering, however, if they'll drop the price.

tion and a mosque, peace and quiet is not on the amenities list, but the rooms are clean
and fairly well maintained.

Eating
Habesha Kitfo $
(mains Birr30-65) Traditionally decked out with wooden stools, cowhide chairs,
and woven wool rugs (plus pet ducks roaming around), this place drips character and is
the ideal spot in which to sample new Ethiopian dishes. Kitfo (minced beef or lamb like
the French steak tartare) is the house speciality, of course, but this restaurant stands out by
having a full vegetarian fasting platter available daily. Don't miss the art gallery down-
stairs.
ETHIOPIAN
Four Sisters $
Offline map
(mains Birr50-90) The food here is fine, but it's the ambience, with stone walls and Debre
Berhan Selassie-inspired paintings plus nightly traditional music, that sets it apart. Actu-
ally owned and operated by four sisters, the service is good too. It's pricier than other op-
tions, but makes for a fun evening and even locals come here for a special night out. The
road is unlit, so take a torch. Women may want to ask them to call a bajaj if leaving late.
Special programs, such as learning how to make tej (honey wine) and injera (Ethiopian
pancakes) are available.
EUROPEAN, ETHIOPIAN
EEPCo Coffee House $
Offline map
(macchiato Birr6) You'd be hard-pressed to find a Gonderian who doesn't consider the
brew here the city's best coffee, and we think it serves the best cake.
