) Doing things their own way, this owner-managed spot next to the Royal En-
closure has the friendliest service in town, an attention to detail and a real commitment to
community involvement. The rooms are nicely decorated and have good mattresses and
the dining room-lounge is perched high to make the best of the valley views.

Royal Enclosure's exit, this new place features eager staff and spotless rooms set back
from traffic noise among plenty of trees. Those on the upper level have pretty views of the
valley below. Overall it has a good vibe.

the hallways would lead you to believe and the absence of faranji prices (though who
knows how long this will last) makes it highly recommended, especially if you score a
room with a view. The attractive two-level restaurant (serving a good pizza) below is pop-
ular with university students for its classy atmosphere.

) Gonder's top digs, and thus the choice of most NGO and UN workers, lords over the
heart of the city. Some of the front-facing rooms have enormous balconies, others have
the tiniest balconies you've ever seen, but all have nice views. All rooms feature full satel-
lite TV and other mod-cons, plus a pool, gym and sauna are in the works.

( 0581-117020; d Birr288) Beyond a little wear and tear, the rooms, with satellite TV
and some with good people-watching views, can't be faulted and the inflated faranji
prices are definitely open to negotiation. The food is pretty good too.
