AROUND ADDIS ABABA
The cacophonous sounds of traffic can chase even the most ardent Addis Ababa adorer into
the hills occasionally. Lucky for them, the hills contain some historic churches (one hewn
from rock in the 12th century) and some remote wilderness.
As well as the places listed here, sights further afield outside Addis Ababa that can still
make good day trips include the crater lakes of Debre Zeyit ( Click here ) , Menagesha Na-
tional Forest ( Click here ) , Ambo ( Click here ) , Mt Wenchi ( Click here ) and the stelae
field at Tiya ( Click here ) .
SEE ETHIOPIA FROM THE SADDLE
Ethiopians are natural horse riders and throughout the highlands you'll see people riding confidently across the plat-
eaus on horses decked out in royal robes. So, perhaps the finest way to see this fantastic country is like an Ethiopian -
from horseback. Equus Ethiopia ( 0911-102609; www.equus-ethiopia.com ; from Birr950 per day) , based just
half an hour outside of Addis, organises a range of horseback expeditions: from a two-hour trot for the novice to mul-
tiday exploratory trips through the mountains and the Menagesha National Forest.
For the truly adventurous it also runs major expeditions a couple of times a year to ride in places as diverse as the
remote western Omo Valley or the Gojjam area near the source of the Blue Nile.
Food, accommodation and your steed are included in the price.
Entoto Mountains
North of town are the Entoto Mountains, the site of Menelik's former capital. There's a ter-
rific but windy panoramic view of Addis Ababa below. Near the summit is the octagonal
Entoto Maryam Church Offline map (
Sun) , which hosted Menelik's coronation. A
small museum can also be found here.
To get to Entoto, take a taxi or minibus to the terminus of Entoto Ave from Arat Kilo.
From there another minibus will take you to Entoto Maryam Church.
