in a time window of at most 25.5 million years, between 34.0-40.0 mya (the age
of the Catarrhini-Platyrrhini divergence) and 14.5-19.1 mya (the earliest diversi-
fication of the extant platyrrhines). By contrast, the arrival of caviomorphs must
have taken place in a time window of at most 16.5 million years (Middle Eocene),
between 41.4-49.6 mya (the Phiomorpha-Caviomorpha split) and 33.0-4.1 mya
(the earliest radiation of extant caviomorphs). There is an overlap of 7.0 million
years between the latest possible arrival of caviomorphs (33.0 mya) and the earli-
est possible arrival of platyrrhines (40.0 mya). The authors concluded that a con-
comitant arrival of both groups in South America cannot be ruled out.
