Ruggiero and Ezcurra (2003) analyzed the compatibility between histor-
ical and ecological analyses in South America. They found consistent simil-
arities, which point to the possibility of reciprocal illumination (in the sense of
Hennig 1950) between evolutionary and ecological biogeography, in order
to provide a better understanding of the factors that explain the origin and
maintenance of continental biotas.
