Peninsular South. Vicariance events: A, Trans-Gulfian opening (earlier); B, Sierra Madre
Occidental uplift (earlier); C, Sierra Madre Occidental uplift and ecological barriers (later);
D, Trans-Gulfian embayments (later); E, Vizcaíno Seaway.
RiddleandHafner(2006)postulatedavicariancemodel( fig.5.12d ) ,correlating
the different events that might have been associated with the biotic history of the
areas analyzed. It implies an equally deep or perhaps deeper history of vicariance
between Continental West and Continental East than between Continental West
and one or both peninsular areas. This may imply that the Continental West area
has played a central role in diversification between two separate events: one in-
volving the evolution of the Sea of Cortés to the west and another involving the
evolution of the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Mexican Plateau to the east.

Three Area Statement Analysis
Nelson and Ladiges (1991a, 1991c) developed this method, which is based
on the three item statement analysis (Marques 2005; Nelson and Ladiges
1993; Nelson and Platnick 1991; Williams and Humphries 2003). In contrast
