Evaluation of the Methods
There are no studies evaluating the performance of all available methods.
Linder (2001) compared PAE using equally weighted data, PAE using his
weighting procedure, and UPGMA using the Jaccard coefficient. He found
that PAE with equally weighted data performed worst under the criterion of
optimality and that weighted PAE outperformed the other two methods in
the quality of the results. In addition, the majority of the areas of endemism
identified in the consensus cladogram from the latter analysis had at least
two endemic species, thus making it unnecessary to check each area of
endemism.
Moline and Linder (2006) compared PAE and endemicity analysis. They
found that both identified adequate areas of endemism, differing in the num-
ber of areas identified, the proportion of species endemic to them, the con-
gruence of the distributions of species restricted to the areas, and the per-
formance score calculated.
