A single cladogram was obtained ( fig. 4.13a ) , with 3,581 steps, a consistency
index of 0.354, and a retention index of 0.291. It shows five main clades ( fig.
4.13b ): the Serranías Transístmicas and part of the coast of the Gulf of Mexico,
Sierra Madre Oriental, and Serranías Meridionales (El Triunfo and Montebello in
Chiapas, San Martín Volcano and Teocelo in Veracruz, and Chinantla in Oax-
aca); the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental (Sierra de San Carlos and
Gómez Farías in Tamaulipas, and northern Querétaro); the Pacific portion of the
Serranías Meridionales (Serranía de San Juan and Nueva Galicia in Nayarit, Jal-
isco, and Colima; Manantlán in Jalisco; and San Jerónimo Coatlán in Oaxaca); the
central portion of the Serranías Meridionales (Tancítaro in Michoacán, Omiltemi in
Guerrero, Ocuilan in Morelos and the state of Mexico, and Iztaccíhuatl in Mexico
City and the state of Mexico); and the southern part of the Sierra Madre Orient-
al plus a part of the Serranías Meridionales (Tlanchinol, Eloxochitlán, Molocotlán,
Tlahuelompa, and Tenango de Doria in Hidalgo; Huayacocotla and Helechales in
Veracruz; and Huautla de Jiménez in Oaxaca).
