Fifteen of the 102 species analyzed led to the recognition of the longest gen-
eralized track ( fig. 4.11b ), which connects the Sierra de Chiribiquete with other
areas of the Guyanan shield. Smaller generalized tracks connect the Sierra de
Chiribiquete with the Chocó area, the Magdalena River basin, the Brazilian shield,
thesouthernAndes,andCentralAmerica,apparentlyindicatingolderrelationships
between areas that were fractured with the uplift of the Andes. Croizat (1976) gave
examples of similar generalized tracks based on the distribution of the genera
Platypsaris (Cotingidae) and Rapatea (Rapateaceae) and suggested an ancestral,
pre-Oligocene distribution (Croizat 1976).
