In-Depth Information
From the compatibility analysis of the matrix, twenty-one cliques were ob-
tained. The longest cliques delineated five generalized tracks ( fig. 4.10 ) , which are
divided into two main groups having baselines in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans,
respectively. Three generalized tracks with baselines in the Atlantic Ocean con-
nect the Falklands with Tristan da Cunha-Gough, with South Georgia Island, and
with Crozet Island, respectively, and then continue from the Falklands to Tierra
del Fuego and the Magellan area. A generalized track with a baseline in the Pa-
cific Ocean connects Campbell Island with Tierra del Fuego, and then it contin-
ues to the Falklands and Magellan. The fifth generalized track, with a baseline in
the Pacific Ocean, joins the Juan Fernandez Islands with the Magellan area and
the Falklands. The five generalized tracks share two segments: one connects the
Falklands and Tierra del Fuego, and the other connects the latter with the Magel-
lan area. The Falklands and Tierra del Fuego were identified as nodes.
This analysis highlighted the complex biotic relationships of most of the studied
areas, especially Tierra del Fuego and the Falklands. Other analyses based on in-
sect taxa (Carvalho and Couri 2002; Morrone 1993c, 1994a; Morrone et al. 1994)
have found similar patterns.
