CASE STUDY 4.3 Biogeography of the Subantarctic Islands
The Subantarctic islands surround Antarctica in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific
oceans. The biogeographic relationships of their biota were analyzed by means of
a panbiogeographic approach by Morrone (1992). The biogeographic units of the
analysis were the Falklands, Tierra del Fuego, the Patagonian steppes, the Ma-
gellan area, and the Juan Fernández and South Georgia islands in South Amer-
ica; Campbell Island and other New Zealand Subantarctic islands; the Tristan
da Cunha-Gough Islands; and Crozet, Marion, and Prince Edward islands in
the Indian Ocean. The analysis was based on fifty taxa, which included ferns,
angiosperms, Collembola, Coleoptera (Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Tenebrionidae,
and Curculionidae), Diptera (Ephydridae), Hemiptera (Delphacidae), Mallophaga,
Crustacea (Cladocera, Isopoda, and Copepoda), Oligochaeta, and Mollusca (En-
dodontidae). The track compatibility analysis was undertaken with PHYLIP (Fel-
senstein 1986).
