GREATER LUSAKA
Pioneer Camp $$
Offline map
( 0966 432700; www.pioneercampzambia.com ; Palabana Rd, off Great East Road;
campsite per person ZMW35, r ZMW300; ) An isolated 25-acre camp, surrounded
by bird-rich woodland, Pioneer is the accommodation of choice for many expats living
outside Lusaka, especially those with a flight out of the country in the morning. Most of
the widely dispersed and simply furnished thatch-roofed chalets have flagstone floors,
small verandahs and large bathrooms. The well-kept facilities for campers are up front
next to the small plunge pool and comfortable bar, lounge and restaurant (mains ZMW70)
area, where the free wi-fi reception works best.
It's signposted 5km south of Great East Road; if you don't have a car, a transfer from
the airport or city centre should run to around ZMW150.

Eight Reedbuck Hotel $$$
( 0211-264788; www.tribehotels.co.zm ; 8 Reedbuck Rd, Kabulonga; s/d incl breakfast
ZMW1155/ 1292; ) Boutique with a twist of African kitsch best sums up the
design scheme of the rooms in this walled-off compound in a suburb southeast of the
centre. Individually decorated with various Zambian tribal identities in mind, all have the
somewhat off-putting plush carpeting of a downstairs rec room. Bathrooms have great
claw-footed tubs and showers illuminated by sunlight through glass ceilings. Public chill-
out spaces include a Miami-like lounge pool area.
Kilimanjaro Country Lodge $$
( 0211-255830; www.kilimanjarozambia.com ; Leopards Hill Rd; s/d incl breakfast
ZMW540/648; ) A good out-of-town option - especially for groups and families -
around 7½km east of the city centre, Kilimanjaro consists of several well-kept, low-slung
buildings on a manicured lawn. The 10 rooms are spacious and simply furnished and man-
agement is responsive to any requests. A perk is free laundry for guests staying more than
a night. Another eight rooms and a pool were in the works at the time of our visit.
The curio-filled garden restaurant here has a large menu (mains ZMW45) including
wraps, pasta, burgers, salads and excellent coffee and a mouthwatering selection of
desserts; it has a playground for children and mini pony rides as well.
