this delightful eyrie clothed in lush vegetation is right under Mt Mulanje and has a swim-
ming pool (fed by fresh water from a small waterfall), lively bar, and, up at the house, a
romantic verandah to drink up the elevated views.
Rooms (choose between the lodge or chalets up the hill) are fresh, with tiled floors,
vaulted thatch ceilings, attractive linen, quirky homemade furniture and bathrooms.
They're also equipped with fans. Outside, the garden brims with banana and blue gum
trees. Very good meals are available too from MK1300. Homy, welcoming and the perfect
base from which to hike.
Mulanje Motel $

Likhubula on the main road, Mulanje Motel has clean rooms with thick blankets on sturdy
beds, fresh white walls and bathrooms. There's also a cafe-bar.

this old red-brick trusty has basic rooms with amazing views of the towering massif.
There are no en suite bathrooms. There is a bar-restaurant (serving plates of the usual
nshima and meat for around MK600) and the garden is dotted with little thatched gazebos
for chilling out in.

Getting There & Away
AXA buses go to/from Blantyre (MK850, 1½ hours), as do minibuses (MK700, 1¼
hours). If you're heading for the border with Mozambique, minibuses and matolas run to
Muloza (MK400, 30 minutes).
