BREWERY
Carlsberg Brewery
( 01-870022; Gomani Rd; 2.30pm Wed)
Thanks to a Danish Foreign Minister who
visited Malawi during the independence celebrations in 1966 and wasn't too impressed by
the beers available, a Carlsberg brewery was established here; and thus began the story of
the country's favourite drink, the 'Green'. Beerophiles can head to the brewery, east of the
centre every Wednesday at 2.30pm, when free tours are laid on (but have to be booked in
advance). You'll be told all about the brewing process after which you'll be rewarded with
a free tasting.
Mandala House
( 01-871932; Mackie Rd; 8.30am-4.30pm Mon-Fri, to 1pm Sat)
This is the oldest
building standing in Malawi and was built back in 1882 as a home for the managers of the
Mandala Trading Company. It's a quietly grand colonial house, encased in wraparound
