With several reserves managed by solid operators, Malawi now has lions, as well as rep-
resentatives of the rest of the 'Big Five'. Add to this some fine safari lodges and the coun-
try merits packing your binoculars.
INLAND BEACHES
Lake Malawi offers relaxing beaches and wonderfully scenic mountain-backed panora-
mas. Cape Maclear - a legendary backpacker hangout - is one of the most popular spots
to appreciate the lake. Likoma Island is another, and there are many more.
LANDSCAPES
From the forests and valleys of the Viphya Plateau to the wildflowers and grasslands of
the Nyika Plateau and the coves, beaches and hillsides fringing Lake Malawi, Malawi's
landscapes are stunning. They are also easily accessible, thanks to a decent road network
and good transport links.
