This simple joint run by Thomas sells biscuits and toiletries, and
dishes up chicken curry, chapatis, chambo, catfish and chips. Authentic and shaded, it's a
nice place to stop, the outdoor bench seating perfect for people-watching passing villa-
gers.

The restaurant at Gecko is a good place to drop in for a meal
by the water. It is well known for its pizzas (from MK1200), which have an eclectic range
of toppings, from fish to mango. You can get your pizzas to go for an extra MK100.

A little orange-green shack on the beach with cheap beers and spirits and (of course) a
reggae soundtrack. It was closed for a face lift when we passed.

Bilharzia is rife in Cape Maclear, so it may be the case you need to drop in to the
Billy Ri-
noon & 2-4pm Mon-Fri, emergency 10am-noon & 3-4pm Sat & Sun)
, which dispenses
bilharzia medicine.
Skyband has come to Cape Maclear so most of the lodges have wi-fi and many will
lend you a laptop to check your emails. You can also buy Airtel phone vouchers at the
more upscale lodges.
Dangers & Annoyances
Bilharzia, a water-borne parasitic infection, is rife in Cape Maclear. In order to treat it,
take a course of praziquantel tablets no less than six weeks after your last swim here. Tab-
lets are easier to find in places such as Lilongwe and Blantyre, but do buy them from a
reputable source - fakes abound.
