villea and boulders down to the beach. There are four rooms in the lodge, five stone
chalets and two family-sized chalets (hut 7 is the best).
The beach is a mere two minutes' walk through a wood singing with monkeys, but
there's also a spotless kidney-shaped pool. The rooms themselves are delightful, with
warm-patterned bedspreads, choice art, fridges, air-con and driftwood bureaus and DSTV.
The deluxe rooms are even nicer with wood floors and verandahs. You'll also find free
kayaks and snorkels, and should you want to, hikes up Senga Mountain can be arranged
for US$15. The lodge is 1km off the main road; turn off just before the gates to the Sun-
bird Livingstonia Beach Hotel.

( 01-263444, 01-263222; www.sunbirdmalawi.com ; standard s/d from US$100/130,
deluxe US$145/175; ) Formerly the Grand Beach Hotel, this spearmint-
white pile (built back in the 1920s and once a favourite haunt for fancy colonial balls)
with its columned entrance and manicured lawns, takes you back to another era. The
beach is immaculate and tempting for swimming with decent views of nearby Lizard Is-
land crested in white guano.
Take dinner on the alfresco terrace, plunge in the spotless pool or head for a massage,
for this is a place to do very little but unwind. Rooms vary in size but are traditional with
international standard furnishings. Pure quality.
