iums, and for scientists they provide a fascinating insight into the process of evolution. Mbuna identification and
classification is an ongoing process and it is thought that many species of mbuna remain undiscovered.
South of Nkhotakota
You may like to visit the Nkhotakota Pot tery ( 0999-380105;
www.dedzapottery.com ; ) , whose turn-off is signposted 15km south of Nkhotakota
town, on the main road. It offers a range of pottery workshops, and courses last anything
from three days to three weeks, and include accommodation, food, tuition and excursions
to local attractions. Participants are housed in lovely chalets on the beach. If you don't
have time for a long course, there is also a workshop where you can make your own pots
or decorate some that are already made (MK560 per hour), and an Aladdin's cave of a
boutique where you can purchase all manner of colourful hand-painted crockery. To get
here from Nkhotakota town catch a matola (MK215).

creative side staying a skip away from a wild, sandy cove.
You don't have to be taking a pottery course to stay here but the chalets are often full of
potters (and named after them too - rooms don't have numbers, but instead take their
names from tales of a certain schoolboy wizard). You also have the option of dorm rooms
and camping and there's an excellent restaurant that provides welcome respite from meat,
nshima and chips. Accepts credit cards.
Fish Eagle Bay Lodge $$$

boasts six delightful whitewashed chalets (two are self-catering), with tasteful decor, as
well as a decent beach bar and excellent beach where you can flop, sail, kayak or play ten-
nis.
