In-Depth Information
The nearby mission church , dating from 1894, has a beautiful stained-glass window
featuring David Livingstone with his sextant, his medicine chest and his two companions,
with Lake Malawi in the background. There are services here every Sunday and if you're
in town you are welcome to attend.
You might also like to take a look at the clock tower . The nearby industrial block was
built by the early missionaries as a training centre and is now a technical college. The ex-
cellent Craft Coffee Shop sells inexpensive carvings and crafts made by local people, as
well as their excellent locally produced coffee; all proceeds go directly to the hospital and
mission.
Down the road from here is the David Gordon Memorial Hospital , once the biggest
hospital in Central Africa, and the stone cairn marking the place where missionary Dr
Robert Laws and his African companion Uriah Chirwa camped in 1894 when they de-
cided to build the mission here. Also nearby is House No 1 , the original home of Dr
Laws before he moved into Stone House.
About 4km from town, the impressive Manchewe Falls thunders 125m into the valley
below. Follow a small path behind the falls and there's a cave where, as the story goes,
local people hid from slave traders a hundred years ago. Allow an hour for going down
and 1½ hours to get back up. Alternatively, if you're walking to/from Chitimba, you can
visit on the way.
The more adventurous can also arrange abseiling trips for half a day or longer. For
more details contact Mick at the Mushroom Farm.

Stone House $
( 01-368223; campsite per person MK900, r MK1500-2000; ) This atmospher-
ic granite house was built on the crest of the mountain in the early 20th century and its
rooms are still redolent with history; cozy rugs, shadowy hardwood floors, and a twee
lounge, which might have been transplanted from an Edinburgh tearoom (they also serve
scones just to complete the conceit!).
Rooms here are comfy with thick blankets and plenty of space. The menu includes pan-
cakes, nshima and homy stews. You can also use the internet for MK15 per minute or do a
load of laundry for MK200. By the time you read this they may have built new cabanas in
the garden.
