There are a number of cheap resthouses on Dedza's main street.
LODGE
Dedza Pottery Lodge $$$
( 01-223069; www.nyasalodges.com ; per person full board US$62) The spacious
rooms here are decorated with local art and bright ceramics from the pottery. The rooms
all have fridges, which are replenished with soft drinks and beers daily, as well as plenty
of tea, coffee and fresh milk. They sit in a large garden and have small terraces from
which to enjoy the views.
Dedza Pottery Restaurant $
(meals from MK635, desserts from MK500) Mention Dedza Pottery and people in the
know will wax lyrical about its cheesecake - and it is indeed a berry-and-cream-laden
plate of heaven. But the restaurant doesn't just serve desserts. You can scoff hearty plates
of cafe standbys like moussaka and lasagne or go for healthier options like salads (the
mountain salad with ginger and green mangoes is recommended). While you eat you can
take in views of the pottery garden and the hills beyond, and in the winter there's a log fire
to keep you warm.
INTERNATIONAL, MALAWIAN
Ntchisi Forest Reserve
This small and rarely visited forest reserve is about 80km north of Lilongwe, near the
large village of Ntchisi ( nch ee-see). At the centre of the reserve is Ntchisi Mountain,
covered in beautiful evergreen forest, as well as some of the last remaining indigenous
rainforest in Malawi, and boasting stunning views of the surrounding area. Birdlife is in-
credibly varied, and on the mammal side of things you might see blue monkeys, baboons,
bush pigs, bushbuck and duikers.
