Better still is the tempting 'Nightjar' restaurant/bar with its well-stocked fridge. There's
even an on-site mechanic for your wheels. The lodge is 10km out of town on the road to-
wards Mchinji.

This fresh upstairs guesthouse on Mandala Rd
is splat in the centre of Old Town. Staff are friendly and rooms are equally pleasant, with
four-posters, ochre walls, fresh linen, mozzie nets, en suites and cable TV.
There's also a great adjoining cafe in their courtyard - as well as a kids playground -
serving up big breakfasts, pancakes, burgers and decent coffee. Come evening the bar is a
real traveller/expat magnet.

From the outside, these
chalets - just outside Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary - look less than impressive but within
they're well appointed with boutique flair, featuring tiled floors, step-in showers, wicker
chairs and African chic decor. Add to this the peaceful setting in quiet leafy gardens and
you have a winner.
There's also a campsite with plenty of
braai
(barbecue) sites and hot showers. The
lodge's restaurant is equally charming. Keep your ears open to hear the Nature Sanctu-
ary's one-eyed lion at night. It's a good idea to ask a guard to accompany you from the
restaurant to your chalet if it's late, as there have been reported muggings.

Anglican-owned St Peter's has four pleasant rooms next to a red-brick chapel. Very peace-
ful with a tranquil, leafy garden. There's also a dorm with four beds and a shared bath-
room.
