In-Depth Information
Pangane and Mucojo, and is currently the only accommodation near Pangane. It consists
of several nicely appointed bungalows (more planned), without water at our visit (al-
though this should be fixed imminently) in a beautiful location directly on the beach, and
a camping area.
Getting There & Away
Pangane is 50km off the main north-south road (the turn-off is at Macomia), and about
9km north of Mucojo, a tiny junction village on the coast. There is at least one daily
chapa between Macomia (where fuel is usually available) and Pangane (Mtc80), depart-
ing Pangane at about 5am. Departures from Macomia are at about 9am; the chapa waits
until the Pemba- Moçimboa da Praia and Moçimboa da Praia-Pemba through buses ar-
rive. There are also several chapas daily from Macomia to Mucojo (Mtc70), from where
you can usually find a pick-up on to Pangane. Dhows to the Quirimbas islands can be ar-
ranged at the lodges or with local fishermen. There are also dhows from Ibo or the other
islands to Pangane.
There's an airstrip at Mucojo for charter planes.
Mueda
Mueda, the main town on the Makonde Plateau and the centre of Mozambique's Makonde
people, is rather lacking in charm. However this is compensated for by a wonderfully cool
climate, a rustic, highland feel and an attractive setting, with views down from the escarp-
ment along the southern and western edges of town. The surrounding area holds the po-
tential for some good hiking, but it was heavily mined during the war and is not yet com-
pletely de-mined, so stick to well-trodden paths. The plateau itself lies at about 800m alti-
tude, with water available only on its slopes and at its base.
The closest ATM is in Moçimboa da Praia.
Sights & Activities
Mueda was originally built as an army barracks during the colonial era. In 1960 it was the
site of the infamous massacre of Mueda. There's a statue commemorating Mueda's role in
Mozambican independence and a mass grave for the 'martyrs of Mueda' at the western
end of town. Maria José Chipande - wife of Alberto Chipande, a well-known Makonde
