In-Depth Information
Chai
It was in the large village of Chai that Frelimo's military campaign against colonial rule
began in 1964. There's a small monument near the main road and every year on 25
September (Revolution Day), national attention turns here as the independence struggle is
remembered with visits by high-ranking officials and re-enactments of historical events.
Chai is about 40km north of Macomia along the main road between Pemba and Moçim-
boa da Praia. Take any vehicle heading to/from Pemba and ask to be dropped off, but do it
early enough in the day so that you have a chance of onward transport, as there's no ac-
commodation.
Pangane

Pangane is a large village on a long, lovely palm-fringed beach about 10km north of Mu-
cojo, and 50km off the main north-south road. Many seasonal fishermen come up from
Nacala and other places in the south, so the sand near the point isn't always the cleanest,
but the setting is beautiful, just on the edge of paradise. Offshore is Macalóè Island, and
beyond that the St Lazarus Bank, known for its diving.
